Lab Management Can Improve Effective Communication – Here’s How
As a lab manager, effective communication is critical. Making yourself available to talk, listen, and provide accurate information to your employees promotes trust and respect. The more you interact with your staff, the more productive they are likely to be.
These tips can help you improve communication with your lab staff.
Talk in Person
Have in-person conversations whenever possible. This is especially important when sharing new information with your employees. Talking face to face provides cues, such as body language and tone of voice, that enhance understanding of the information. Your staff members can more easily ask questions and alleviate concerns when directly speaking with you. You can use electronic communication, such as email or text, to reinforce what you shared and follow up.
Actively Listen
Show you are listening by maintaining eye contact and nodding your head. Also, share what you believe the person is saying to ensure you understand. Ask open-ended questions to gather more information and take notes when necessary. These actions show you are interested in what the person has to say.
Be Honest
Always tell your staff the truth. Make promises only when they are within your power to follow through on. Admit when you are wrong about something. Give your employees credit for their ideas and accomplishments. Being honest builds your credibility and effectiveness as a leader. Productivity and employee morale remain strong when you are honest.
Encourage Employee Input
Involve employees in decision-making. Your employees can provide valuable feedback on research problems, customer needs and attitudes, and supplier relationships. Walk around the lab and talk with each employee; learn what they do and how you can help them do it better. Take turns asking and answering questions. Your staff will feel respected and valued when you ask for their advice. They will also be more likely to meet deadlines and goals.
